Jean-Claude Zehnder was professor of organ from 1972–2006 at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where numerous prominent musicians were among his pupils. He holds the position of organist on the Johann Andreas Silbermann organ of 1761 in the cathedral of Arlesheim. His many activities include recitals and recordings, teaching at organ academies, and writings focusing on performance practice and the stylistic development of Johann Sebastian Bach. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dortmund.


Jean-Claude Zehnder’s study of the early works of J.S. Bach was published by Schwabe (Basel) in 2009. It establishes for the first time a chronological order of some 120 works composed between about 1695–1708. In 2012 he published vol. 4 (Toccatas, Passacaglia etc.) of the new Breitkopf edition of the Organ works By Bach, in 2015 vol. 8 (The Great Eighteen Chorales).
