Intonatio, Praeambulum, Faubordon and Toccata:
the first duty of an organist

Through very simple patterns and historical examples, we can learn how the organist of the Renaissance and the Baroque time was able to improvise short pieces in order to give the right pitch to the choir, the instrumental consort or the Congregation and respecting the right character of each Church-Mode. Moreover we can better understand the development of this form towards the more complex Toccata and Praeludium of the XVII-XVIII Century.
